The passengers arrived at La Spezia on 8 April 1946 and were blockaded by the British. Yehuda Arazi exploited the situation, and organized a hunger strike, then threatened to blow up the ship. After a truce, the British finally gave in, the passengers were given permits and arrived legally on Fede and Fenice. Refugees included 167 partisans from Poland, members of pioneer groups and ultra-Orthodox Agudat Israel, and 12 children. By this maneuver, Arazi gained world-wide publicity for the plight of the Jewish survivors.

Ship was purchased in Romania in 1942, but after the Mefkure (No. 85) was sunk, the passengers refused to sail. Captured by British destroyers Jervis and Chequers. The largest contingent of refugees to date, including 370 (240 under 12) children.

Name: Max Nordau (1849-1923) was a famous Zionist leader and philosopher.

Ship was re-engined in Istanbul with a U-boat engine. Captured by British destroyer Chequers 140 miles at sea. Passengers included 195 French immigrants and 548 members of a youth movement from Belgium.

Name: Tel Hai was a settlement in northern Galilee, attacked by Arabs in 1920 when Joseph Trumpeldor was killed.

Name: Charles Orde Wingate (1903-1944) was a British officer who in 1938 organized the Special Night Squads, which later became the Haganah. He was killed in action in Burma in 1944.
